![]() Who is Fragment?Svat'a Kotas - banjoHenrich Novak - dobro, vocals Emil Formanek - guitar, vocals Jiri Pola - bass, vocals Jana Dolankova - lead vocal A Little History . . .Fragment was formed in 1993 by banjo player, Svat'a Kotas, who is a veteran of the Czecho-Slovak bluegrass scene. Kotas played formerly with Robert Kreston (Druha Trava/Second Grass) in an influential group from the 1970s called Poutnici. The landmark album Bluegrass '90, in which Kotas was a participant, brought him national awards for Best Banjo Player of the Year, Best Instrumental band of the Year, and Best Album of the Year. Bassist and songwriter, Jiri Pola is another former member of Poutnici; and the currently works with the Flatt & Scruggs Revival Band in addition to Fragment. Henrich Novak, the band's dobro player who also holds a degree in microbiology, is considered by many to be one of the three best dobro players in Europe. Emil Formanek and Jana Dolankova, both just in their 20s, round out Fragment. Jana is a journalism at the University of Komensky in Bratislava, and is the "designated English speaker" for this band. In just two short years, Fragment has recorded their Sunday afternoon CD on the UMG Country Records label and appeared on both Czech and Slovak national television, as well as at a number of festivals. At the 1994 Annual Banjo Jamboree in the Czeck Republic, Fragment won top honors for Best Band and Best CD of the year. They have recently signed with the Popron label and are working on a second recording, between European tour dates in 1995.
