J. Max McKee & The McKee Family Band are known for hard driving picking with a very high energy show. J. Max McKee is the leader and focal point of the band. Although, Max plays a variety of instruments he is best known for his banjo work. Accompanying Max are addtional original members of the group. Teena McKee on guitar and vocals, and Doris Mckee on bass and vocals.
The group has performed from Washington to Branson to Florida, and most points in between. Major festivals include Christopher Run Virginia, and Waldo Florida.
Max entertains the audience with a wide variety of styles which include arrangements by all the greats like Earl Scruggs, Ralph Stanley, Don Reno and Raymond Fairchild. However, Max is not a imitator, rather an innovator, who's energy and mastering of the banjo is reflected by his own style. One of Maxs' interests is the composition of original material focusing around the banjo. Max credits his early influences to Don Reno, Hubert Davis, and Earl Scruggs. Max has been recognized with a feature article in Bluegrass Unlimited, and other Bluegrass Music related Publications.
The McKee family has produced numerous cassette tapes and videos of their band. In addition, the band has corraborated on recording projects with Randall Hylton, Curley Seckler, and Raymond Falrchild.
The J. Max McKee & The McKee Family Band can be best described as traditional, high energy Bluegrass pickers who have their heart in their music and their fans. They work hard to please all audiences. If you like home, mother and apple pie, you'll like the Mckees!
