BATTLEFIELD STICKS
A Closer Look.

ALL Battlefield Sticks are saplings. None are secondary shoots or limbs. Thus they possess the compact ring and grain structure seen in the trunk of a tree. This natural quality gives them their inherent strength and resilience to stand-up to walking cane and staff use.

No two Battlefield Sticks are alike. Each is a unique design by the forces of nature and the individual wood species genetic code, which fit the sapling to a particular micro-environment. With knife-blade and stains, the hand-crafter (me) merely exposes these natural qualities.

Battlefield Sticks are collected from the uplands surrounding the town of Manassas, Virginia--famous for it's association with Civil War history. Yes. .these sticks could very well have grown on land trodden by soldiers? Most sticks are gathered in the cooler months from woodlots destined for development, abandoned overgrown fields to be cleared for housing, road and power-line corridors overdue for mowing, etc. Essentially they have been preserved from destruction.

From the field to your hand, a finished Battlefield Stick is processed through a dozen steps. All stages in the operation are completed by yours truly--a retired high-school biology teacher of 32 years. With drying (2-4 weeks) discounted, the general sequence of collection - trimming - sanding - staining varnish amounts to three hours average per stick. And for the sake of posterity and time dimension each stick is labeled (bottom end) with a "born-on date."

Battlefield Sticks are dissimilar from most other handcrafted works! They have a defined practical use as a third leg. The right walking or hiking stick can become part of your comfort stature--and may well travel with you wherever you go. Many world travelers have their stick as their support companion.

Battlefield Sticks are in 3 categories. . .Walking; Hiking; and American Shillelagh (all have shock tip & I.D. hang-tag):

Prices range from $15 to $50 for a stick.

General pricing for sticks

Sticks are priced individually, with cost determined by the degree of preparation and labor. Price factors include wood type, debarking and trimming time, whether the sapling requires digging, gnarling (cleaning natural vine twist impressions) along stick length and tasking a handle (root or knot) on top end.

Fitting Your Stick

All sticks can be cut to length. Just remove the tip and trim the end with a small saw.

Walking sticks with handles should be about wrist length with arm extended. This is for unsloped terrain.

Staffs with or without handles are mostly used for ambling over sloped terrain. The length should measure about 10 inches above your elbow. This helps in stepping down steep trails.

Shillelaghs are stout and can be used for any terrain. They may also be used for your security as a defensive tool.
